Stairlift grants are available through the mobility aids grant scheme

Mobility aids grants can cover up to €6,000 towards your new stairlift.

Stairlift grants are available through the Mobility Aids Grant Scheme which is a means-tested grant that is available from your local county council. This scheme provides grants for works designed to address mobility problems in the home such as the purchase and installation of stairlifts, grab rails, a level access shower or access ramps. The scheme is primarily for older people, but people with a disability can also apply for it.

The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme

The maximum amount available under this scheme is €6,000, which may cover 100% of the cost of the work. If your stairlift does not cost the full €6000, the grant will just cover the cost of the stairlift and installation.

Please note: the maximum amount may not be fully awarded. Grant amounts are subject to the funding of each local authority and the level of income of the house. The local authority can decide whether they pay the full grant or a percentage in each case. This decision is based on your eligibility for the grant and is determined by your local council.

The Housing Adaptation Grant for Older People and People with a Disability is available from local authorities if you need to make changes to a home to make it more suitable for a person with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability or mental health difficulty. The maximum amount available through this scheme is €30,000.

This grant can help you to make changes and adaptations to your home, for example, making it wheelchair-accessible, extending it to create more space, adding a ground-floor bathroom or toilet or a stairlift.

How to apply for a stairlift grant

First, check that you qualify for this scheme.

  • You are over 65 with or without a disability
  • You are under 65 with a disability or serious illness.

You qualify for this scheme if you live in any of the following:

  • A home that you own
  • You are buying from your local council under the Tenant Purchase Scheme
  • A privately rented house, flat or apartment
  • A home that is provided to you under a voluntary housing Capital Assistance and Rental Subsidy scheme
  • A home in a communal residence.

Next, fill out the application form. You will need the following information:

  • Your PPS number
  • Proof of any income
  • Details of your tax district
  • Confirmation that your tax is in order
  • Evidence that the Local Property Tax on the house has been paid.
  • A report from your Doctor and an/or Occupational Therapist

Frequently asked questions

Which grant should I apply for?

The Mobility Aid Housing Grant Scheme is usually the applicable grant scheme for stairlift installations. The maximum grant limit of €6,000 and can cover up to 100% of the cost. Please note, the grant is subject to means testing. 

What income is means tested?

Your total household income is assessed to find out if you qualify for the grant and at what level of assistance.

Household income is:

  • The property owner’s (or tenant’s) annual gross income, together with their spouse’s or partner’s annual gross income in the previous tax year
  • The income of any other adults living in the household who are aged over 23 years if in full-time education, or aged over 18 if not in full-time education

The following is not taken into account when calculating your household income:

Do you need an Occupational Therapist's assessment?

When the local authority receives your application, it may request an occupational therapist’s (OT) assessment. The local authority can arrange for this, or you can employ an OT yourself and recoup up to €200 of the cost from the local authority as part of the grant, subject to the maximum grant limit of €6,000.

Do I need to submit a quote?

You must include a written itemised quotation from a contractor, indicating the cost of the work required. If the local authority considers that this quotation is unreasonable, it will ask you to get another one. 

If you intend to pay more than €650 to a contractor, your contractor may be asked to submit their Tax Clearance Certificate to the local authority. Leinster Bathrooms and Stairlifts can supply a tax clearance certificate. 

How long does approval take?

Your application for the grant will be prioritised according to your medical need. Highest priority will be given to people who are terminally ill, or where alterations or adaptations would facilitate their discharge from a hospital or the continuance of care in their own home.

How long does grant approval last?

It is expected that the work will start within 6 months of your grant approval. If this does not happen, the local authority may allow a time extension.

Can I apply for a second grant?

In general, the work done on your home is expected to be appropriate to your future needs as well as your current needs. However, if your needs change substantially over time, you may find that further works are required. You can apply again for a Mobility Aids Grant and your application will be assessed in the normal way.

Can I claim my VAT back?

Any user with a disability can normally claim the VAT back on a stairlift with Revenue. This can be done by submitting a VAT 61A form or by submitting a request through the Revenue Online Services (ROS). You can also claim your VAT back on the contribution you made to a grant assisted stairlift.
